Camtasia is "screen-casting" software. It allows you to record your voice and the screen of your computer, creating a multimedia presentation for your students. Camtasia tutorial videos are available here,
To use Camtasia at Highline, contact the ITS Help Desk and request that Camtasia be installed. If you don't have a college issued laptop, you can also install it on your home computer.
Use a script, PowerPoint, or outline to organize your presentation.
Keep it short -- about 10 minutes per video, or else your audience will lose focus.
Caption your video. It helps people understand your video! You can use the "export" button and export the video directly to your Panopto account. Panopto will autocaption your video for you.
Check the captions and edit them, if needed.
Upload your video to your Canvas course or website.
Panopto allows instructors to create videos, upload zoom recordings, and create content that can easily be inserted in Canvas courses. These videos can be excellent for online and hybrid courses. They can also be additional resources for students in face-to-face courses.
Panopto automatically captions videos and allows for easy caption editing to ensure accessibility of all course content.
You can make a video in Panopto and insert it into your course.
You can also upload Zoom recordings of your lectures and courses into Panopto to caption and insert them into your course.
This is the recommended way to record Zoom meetings to share in your course:
These are written instructions of what is shown in the video above, however, the video does not include the sections on "Inform Students" and "Caption Recording"
IMPORTANT: You must make a recurring meeting for each class, and you must set up that meeting from inside Canvas.
Set up Canvas, Zoom, and Panopto
You only have to do this part once for each course.
Go into your Canvas course and add both Zoom and Panopto Recordings to your course's left navigation menu.
Open your course, select the settings option from the left side menu.
At the top, select the navigation tab.
Move Zoom and Panopto from the bottom of the menu [the inactive space] into the active space.
Click on the newly added link, and you'll be asked to authorize Zoom.
Click Authorize.
If you're asked to log in, do so with your usual MyHighline information.
In your course navigation, click on Panopto Recordings and authorize.
Inform Students
In your syllabus, let students know that you plan to record classes.
In each meeting, let participants know you are recording and what you plan to do with this recording. Zoom will also prompt students that they are consenting to recording.
In your zoom settings in your zoom account, --> Settings --> Recording tab --> Cloud recording section. (While this is in the cloud recording section, this setting applies to all recordings.) --> uncheck the box "display participants' names in the recording"
Create A Class Meeting
To join a meeting, people will need the meeting URL. It'll look something like https://highline.zoom.us/j/yourMeetingID
Once you have made the class meeting, you can post this as a link in your Canvas course, send it in an email, or include it in a calendar invitation. We recommend the following settings when scheduling meetings:
The times are guidelines. You can open a meeting before the time indicated, and end it anytime.
Enable to waiting room and passcode.
Select Video off for participants when they join.
Disable "Join before host" for classes and office hours. No one will be able to start the meeting without you.
Mute participants on entry.
Do not select "Only authenticated users can join." This will require students to have to log in; our experience is that it's not worth the trouble students will have unless you've had disruptive behavior in the class.
Schedule a Recurring Meeting
Make sure you have completed the Set-Up steps above to enable and authorize Zoom and Panopto.
From your Canvas Course, select the Zoom tab on the left
Click on the Schedule a New Meeting button
Fill out the meeting information - select that it is a recurring meeting, check waiting room (but nothing else in security) and check record meeting automatically, if you would like to use that setting.
Select to record to the cloud
Starting the Meeting
From Canvas, open your course and then the Zoom tab on the left side
Locate the Recurring Meeting you set for your course
Click Start to start the meeting
If you did not enable immediately start recording, make sure to select Cloud Recording [it will be stored in Panopto this way]
When you end the meeting, the video from the meeting will be available in Panopto to edit and share.
Record Each Class
Enter the class through the Zoom link in your Canvas Course
In your course left navigation menu, click on Zoom. While you'll be able to see all of your Zoom meetings, your students will only be able to see the Zoom meetings for their course. (If you only want to see your Zoom meetings for that course, check the box next to "Show my course meetings only."
Click the record option, and choose "Record to the cloud." (if you did not set the meeting to automatically record)
At the end of the class session, your recording will be automatically added to the Panopto Recordings link for your course.
Be patient. It takes time for the recording to be saved to the Zoom servers and then some more time for Zoom to send it over to Panopto and a bit more time for Panopto to process the recording and make it available. The longer your recording, the longer it will take.
Caption the recording
Once the recording has posted in Panopto, you can also caption it.
Click on the Panopto Recordings link in your course.
Click the Edit button [it looks like a movie clapboard and pencil]
On the left side of the Panopto Edit Screen, click captions.
Review the captions and edit them, as needed. While the captions are pretty for automatically generated captions, they will have trouble with highly technical content, such as compound names in Chemistry.
Click the Apply button at the top of the screen.
Add Panopto to Canvas (use the settings navigation to drag the Panopto bar into your navigation)
Click on the Panopto Recordings Tab in navigation
Press the Plus sign create to start making your video.
Select Panopto Capture - the three top buttons will let you select the audio, video, and screens that will be used during the capture.
Select the red record button to record and select it again to stop recording.
From Panopto, you can edit the video to remove any sections you would like. (make sure to hit the apply button)
From Panopto, you can edit the captions to ensure an accurate transcript of the video. (make sure to hit the apply button)
Once you have edited and saved the video, open your Canvas course.
In an already existing page or you can create a new page, open the edit button.
Select the green Panopto symbol on the tool bar.
Select your video and insert!
Normally, Panopto will make videos available to students as soon as it's done processing them. This includes anything you upload, lecture recordings, and recordings from the Zoom integration. It is best practice to set the folders to "never" and then share each video, to ensure that nothing is accidentally shared.
Change the default setting for the class (folder):
Log into Panopto.
Select the Course Folder for the class. Click on the settings icon that looks like a gear.
Scroll down to Availability
Set the folder to "never (unless set on the session)". Don't worry, you can still publish each class video.
Repeat these steps for each course.
When you're ready to publish a video, go to the Panopto folder. Find the video to publish.
Click on settings for that video.
The settings will show the Overview tab. Scroll down to Availability
In the section labeled "Session becomes available" click on "with its folder (immediately)"
Close the Panopto settings, and the video will be available.
Panopto has a mobile app, so students can watch (or create) recordings on tablets and phones.
Note: when a student starts the app, they need to enter Highline’s server address: highline.hosted.panopto.com.
Students can view the videos you share with the course folder.
You can embed the Panopto videos into your course modules, so students can see it directly in the related course content.
Making an Assignment Folder
Students can also MAKE Panopto videos and share them. To access this option, you will want to create an assignment folder. This ensures that students can share their videos with you, but other students will not immediately see them. This also allows students to create material in the folder without needing editing access to the larger course folder.
In the folder for your course, click on the Setting icon - the gear.
In the overview tab, click the Create Assignment Folder link under the Assignment Folder heading.
A new folder will be created called Course Name [Assignments]. Select that link.
Now, students can open their Panopto account and make videos into that folder.
If you would like students to be able to see the video submissions of other students, click the settings icon, click the settings tab in the settings menu, and select Allow viewers to see each other's submissions.
If you no longer want students to be able to submit videos, navigate to the main page for the course, click the Settings icon, and select Close under the Assignment Folder heading. You will maintain access to the videos, but students will not be able to submit more videos.
You can then create another Assignment folder, if you wish to have students submit again.
